South Africans have unusually rich options — strong European and British ancestral ties, Commonwealth membership, and a passport that benefits a lot from an upgrade. But there is one rule that has to come first, because getting it wrong can cost you your South African citizenship.

Read this first: apply to retain your SA citizenship

Under the South African Citizenship Act, an adult South African who acquires another citizenship by a voluntary and formal act (such as naturalizing abroad) without first being granted retention of South African citizenship can automatically lose it. The fix is straightforward but easy to miss: apply to the Department of Home Affairs to retain your South African citizenship before you take up the other nationality. No generic "second passport" page leads with this — and it is the single most important step for a South African.

(Acquiring another citizenship automatically — for example by descent at birth — is treated differently from a voluntary formal acquisition; confirm your specific situation with Home Affairs.)

The routes that fit South Africans best

  • UK Ancestry visa — South Africa is a Commonwealth country, so a grandparent born in the UK lets you live and work in Britain for five years, settle, and naturalize. Common among South African families and far cheaper than investment migration.
  • EU citizenship by descent — Italian, Irish, German, Polish, and Portuguese ancestry are all well represented in South Africa. Ireland (Irish-born grandparent via the Foreign Births Register), Italy (parent/grandparent born in Italy, post-2025 two-generation rule), and Germany (restoration routes for descendants of the persecuted) are the usual high-value paths to an EU passport.
  • Caribbean citizenship-by-investment — St Kitts, Dominica, Grenada, or Antigua (roughly US$200,000–250,000 to contribute) add strong visa-free travel quickly, if budget allows and the ancestry routes do not apply.

Cost in context

Ancestry and the UK route cost mostly time and documents; CBI is a six-figure decision. For many South Africans the cheapest viable EU passport is already in the family tree — worth checking before spending.

A tax note (informational, not advice)

A second citizenship does not by itself change where you are tax-resident; South Africa taxes residents on worldwide income, and your status turns on the physical-presence and ordinarily-resident tests. Take South African and destination-country tax advice (and handle the citizenship-retention step) before relocating.

The pathways here use pass2port's deterministic engine for a generic South African passport holder. For a personalized ranking of investment and residence routes by passport, the free quiz takes about three minutes. Descent citizenship is covered in our informational guides — pass2port does not check your eligibility. This is information, not legal or tax advice.

Citizenship by descent (informational)

Some South Africa holders may have a citizenship-by-descent route if a parent or grandparent was born abroad. pass2port publishes sourced guides to those rules — we do not check whether you qualify. For investment and residence pathways ranked to your passport, use the quiz below.

Tax context for South Africa holders

South Africa uses a residence-based tax system at the national level. Moving residence or acquiring another citizenship can change what you owe — this is a pointer, not advice.

Common questions

Can South Africans lose their citizenship by getting a second passport?
Yes — and this is the critical rule. Under the South African Citizenship Act, an adult who acquires another citizenship by a voluntary and formal act without first obtaining retention of South African citizenship can automatically lose it. Apply for retention BEFORE you naturalize elsewhere.
Which routes suit South Africans best?
Two stand out: the UK Ancestry visa (South Africa is a Commonwealth country, so a UK-born grandparent qualifies you), and EU citizenship by descent for South Africans with Italian, Irish, German, Polish, or Portuguese roots, which are common.
Is citizenship-by-investment worth it for South Africans?
Caribbean CBI adds strong visa-free travel and is fast, but weigh it against the cheaper ancestry and UK routes — and always handle the SA retention-of-citizenship step first.
