Second passport options

Second passport and residence options for Indian citizens

India does not permit dual citizenship.

Routes that grant a second citizenship generally require giving up your India passport. Residence-first programs and Overseas Citizen equivalents (where they exist) are often the realistic lane — not headline citizenship ads.

Indian passport holders face a constraint that reshapes every "second passport" conversation: India does not permit dual citizenship. That is not a footnote — it decides which routes are genuinely on the table versus which look attractive in ads but require giving up your Indian citizenship. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a long-term visa for the diaspora, not a passport.

So for most Indians the real question is not "which second passport?" but "which second residence lets me keep my Indian citizenship?" That single fact reshuffles the usual rankings — and almost no generic "cheapest passport" page leads with it.

Keep your Indian passport: residence routes

These grant residence, not citizenship, so your Indian citizenship is untouched:

  • UAE Golden Visa — 10-year renewable residence for property worth at least AED 2,000,000 (about US$545,000), held three years, with no minimum-stay rule. A natural fit given the large Indian community in the Gulf. See our UAE Golden Visa guide for Indian passport holders.
  • Portugal Golden Visa — EU residence via a €500,000 qualifying fund, with roughly 7 days a year of required presence; permanent residence after 5 years. (Portugal extended naturalization timelines in 2026 — relevant only if you ever pursued citizenship.)
  • Greece (real estate from €400,000) and Hungary (€250,000 investment-fund certificates) are comparable EU residence options with light stay requirements.

Your Indian passport is mid-strength — about 27 visa-free plus 47 visa-on-arrival destinations on Government of India figures — so an EU or Gulf residence widens where you can live, bank, and travel well before any citizenship question.

The citizenship lane (and the trade it requires)

  • UK Ancestry route — frequently overlooked: India is a Commonwealth country, so an Indian citizen with a grandparent born in the UK can live and work in the UK for five years, settle, then naturalize. It is a residence route first; British citizenship later would still trigger India's dual-citizenship rule.
  • Caribbean citizenship-by-investment (St Kitts & Nevis, Dominica, Grenada, Antigua — roughly US$200,000–250,000 to contribute) is fast and adds strong visa-free travel, but taking the citizenship means renouncing your Indian passport — a serious step few take lightly.

A tax note (informational, not advice)

India taxes residents on worldwide income, and your residency status — including the transitional RNOR status — changes your exposure as you spend time abroad. A second residence can have real tax consequences in both countries. This is exactly the kind of question for a qualified Indian chartered accountant before you move money or days across borders.

Citizenship by descent (informational)

Some India holders may have a citizenship-by-descent route if a parent or grandparent was born abroad. pass2port publishes sourced guides to those rules — we do not check whether you qualify. For investment and residence pathways ranked to your passport, use the quiz below.

Tax context for India holders

India uses a residence-based tax system at the national level. Moving residence or acquiring another citizenship can change what you owe — this is a pointer, not advice.

Common questions

Can Indian citizens hold two passports?
No. India does not permit dual citizenship. Acquiring another country's citizenship generally requires surrendering your Indian passport. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a separate long-term status, not a second passport.
Which routes work for Indians who must keep their Indian citizenship?
Residence-by-investment and long-stay visas that do not require naturalizing — the UAE Golden Visa, and EU golden visas like Portugal, Greece, and Hungary. You keep your Indian passport because these grant residence, not citizenship.
Where can I read about descent citizenship?
pass2port publishes informational citizenship-by-descent guides with official sources. We do not check whether you personally qualify — see our citizenship-by-descent section or take the quiz for investment and residence pathways ranked to your passport.
